YOKOHAMA TENTS (2022)
Competition Proposal: 2022
Design team: Mieko Watanabe, Jade Akouri
Can we address the problem of plastic waste through a collaborative design- build activity?
As the competition prospectus called for integration of SDG into public furniture design, wAtelier proposed a workshop-based building of gazebos using disposed plastic bags.
The bags are recycled into threads, which are woven into a string figure (ayatori), a traditional Japanese child’s play using fingers and leftover yarn. The plastic ayatori threads are amplified to the building scale. They are wrapped around in tension between paper tubes that are connected with 3D-printed corner pieces. The tents are lightweight and can be built and dismantled easily on site.
